Understanding Prostate Diseases Transurethral Resection of the Prostate |
|||
| Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is another surgical technique
performed under anesthesia through a fiberoptic instrument that is inserted
into the penis.1 The physician can look through the instrument
to see prostate tissue that is blocking urinary flow through the urethra.2
The physician then removes the prostate tissue with the instrument leaving
behind the prostates "shell."3 No incision
is needed, and a catheter will be left in place for a few days until any
urinary bleeding resolves.4
This procedure may be done to relieve symptoms before other treatments begin. It is not done to cure the disease or to remove the cancer. It is often used to relieve the symptoms of non-cancerous prostate enlargement.5 What are possible side effects: Possible leaking urine. Incontinence and impotence are not generally associated with a TURP.6 Who makes a good candidate: Men who are not candidates for radical prostate surgery.
