Understanding Prostate Diseases
Watchful Waiting

"Watchful Waiting" (also called expectant therapy) is not active treatment, but it may be a good choice for some men. Because prostate cancer often grows very slowly, older men who have the disease may not need treatment.1 Your physician may suggest taking a watch and wait approach. This course of treatment will involve periodic examinations to determine if the cancer has become more aggressive. Active treatment can always be started later if the cancer begins to grow more rapidly or causes problems.2

What are possible side effects: When waiting and not pursuing active treatment of the cancer, it is possible that the cancer may spread beyond the prostate.

Who makes a good candidate: Men diagnosed with prostate cancer in their late 70s or 80s with a limited long-term life expectancy or men in their 60s and 70s with a limited long-term life expectancy.3

Important Safety Considerations
Viadur should not be used by patients who are allergic to the drug leuprolide. Viadur should not be used by women or children and was not studied in women or children.
Viadur, like other similar medications, causes a temporary increase of testosterone in the blood during the first week of treatment. During this initial period, patients may experience worsening of symptoms or onset of new symptoms including bone pain, nervous system disturbances, blood in the urine, difficulty urinating, and spinal cord compression.
During treatment, the most common side effects reported throughout the body were hot flashes, lack of energy, breast enlargement, depression, and sweating. The most common side effects reported where the implant was inserted in the arm were bruising and burning.
